2025 Travel Boom Drives Visa Surge, Sparks Scams
The global travel sector is experiencing an extraordinary surge in 2025, with visa applications for destinations worldwide reaching historic peaks.
A collaborative report from the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) and VFS Global projects that Africa’s Travel & Tourism industry could add US$168 billion to the continent’s economy and create over 18 million jobs.
This transformative growth depends on key policy advancements, including modernized air infrastructure, efficient visa processing systems, and robust tourism marketing to attract global travellers.
The unprecedented demand for visa appointments has created a breeding ground for scammers targeting visa applicants and jobseekers. Fraudsters, often posing as VFS Global staff or third-party agents, exploit eager applicants by offering expedited appointment slots in exchange for illicit payments, preying on those seeking timely travel documentation.
Mr. Stephen Kubasu, General Manager-Operations at VFS Global, urged applicants to remain vigilant. “Visa appointment slots are allocated online, based on demand projections and Consulate capacity planning,” he stated.
“We advise applicants to arrive at Visa Application Centres 15 minutes early to secure their slot. Travellers must beware of fraudulent parties promising early bookings for a fee. Many scammers create fake profiles on social media and search platforms, misusing our logos and official branding to deceive applicants. These fraudulent listings often include misleading contact details, tricking travellers into believing they are engaging with VFS Global’s legitimate channels.”
To counter these scams, VFS Global has rolled out stringent anti-fraud measures. Access to Visa Application Centres is now limited to individuals with confirmed appointments, strengthening security. A new validation system integrates visa application form reference numbers with booking references to ensure authenticity.
An OTP (One-Time Password) requirement for booking appointments minimizes unauthorized agent interference. Additionally, VFS Global has launched a widespread anti-fraud campaign, embedding warnings across social media, appointment letters, call centre messages, and physical signage. Applicants encountering suspicious activities are encouraged to report details to acco@vfsglobal.com for prompt investigation.
The surge in outbound travel has extended visa processing times, prompting VFS Global to enhance its operational framework.
The company has extended centre operating hours, introduced dedicated slots for passport submission and collection, and expanded waiting areas to better accommodate applicants. These initiatives aim to streamline processes and improve the applicant experience amid the travel boom.
