Google has introduced emoji reactions to Gmail, a new feature designed to streamline and enrich email communication.
Drawing inspiration from popular messaging platforms like WhatsApp and Slack, this update enables users to respond to emails with a single emoji, fostering quicker, more expressive interactions.
Now rolling out to Android users, with iOS and web support to follow, the emoji reaction feature allows Gmail and Google account holders to add visual responses to one-on-one emails.
Users can select from a curated set of emojis—such as thumbs-up, heart, or clapping hands—by tapping the emoji button at the bottom of an eligible email.
Reactions appear beneath the message, providing immediate, concise feedback without adding to the email thread.
The feature is tailored for personal and informal exchanges, with certain limitations. Emoji reactions are not available for group emails, BCC messages, or communications with non-Gmail users.
Additionally, enterprise and educational account holders may face restrictions depending on administrative settings.
Visible to all participants in the thread and updating in real time, emoji reactions mirror the functionality seen in Google Docs comments and Google Meet chats, ensuring a seamless user experience.
While not intended for formal correspondence, this feature offers a practical and engaging way to acknowledge or respond to messages efficiently.
